Berlin-Schönefeld Airport (Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld) is one of Berlin's two international airports. It was opened in 1934 next to the Henschel aircraft plant. Both facilities were used for the construction of machinery and equipment for aircraft construction before and during the Second World War. At the time of the Berlin Wall, Schönefeld Airport was the only airport serving East Berlin and the largest civilian airport in the GDR.
The runway is located in the south-east outside the city, 20 kilometres outside the capital, so you can reach the centre of Berlin in less than 30 minutes thanks to the car rental service at Berlin Schönefeld Airport. Due to the distance, the airport is less noise polluted compared to the other two Berlin airports, Tegel and Tempelhof (currently closed).
The German government is currently planning to convert Schönefeld Airport into Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport in the next few years after the completion of the terminal and runway expansion works. The expansion of this airport is due to the closure of Tempelhof airport, which is located in the city centre and is currently a tourist attraction.
It has four interconnected terminals, identified as A, B, C and D respectively, which are mainly served by low-cost airlines. The low-cost airline EasyJet has almost all of terminal B. Terminal D is occupied by the German airline Germanwings, leaving the other low-cost airlines to operate in the remaining terminals.
The airport facilities are small, but you'll find most of the same services as at other airports: banks, car rental services, restaurants and bars, fashion and gift shops. Scnönefeld airport has a wifi service that you can enjoy for one hour free of charge.
There are short and long-stay parking areas. The short-stay car park is located in front of Terminal B and is free for the first 20 minutes. Long-stay parking costs a total of 12 euros per day. A large number of hotels are located within walking distance of the airport.
