How to get to Barcelona

We have talked about the importance of the province of Barcelona, its most important towns, some routes you can do with your hire car and many interesting facts about the city itself. But it is just as important to know how to get to Barcelona for those of you who want to make the most of the days you spend here. That's why we'd like to tell you some of the most common ways, and some not so common, of getting to the city.

Remember that you can pick up and return your hire car at any of the points we have in the city.

By plane

Barcelona-El Prat Airport: the distance between the airport and Barcelona is about 16 kilometres. If you take the C-31 road in a north-westerly direction, you can reach the city centre in less than 25 minutes. Don't forget that from the airport you can go either by train or in your own car, thanks to Pepecar you can pick it up as soon as you land here.

By bus

Barcelona Nord station: thousands of travellers choose the bus as a means of transport to reach other cities. If you are one of them, this station is located about 2 kilometres from the city centre. From here you have two main options: to go by train to the centre (or by metro), or to go by hire car, since if you come by bus you won't have your own vehicle. If you choose the latter option, take Carrer d'Ausiàs Marc south towards Via Laietana/Plaça d'Urquinaona. Then take Carrer Comtal, Carrer de les Magdalenes, Carrer de Duran i Bas, Avinguda del Portal de l'Àngel until you reach Carrer de la Canuda. In any case, if you follow the signs on the posts, you won't get lost.

By train

Sants Station: thanks to the high-quality train services we have in Spain, you can reach Barcelona by train from anywhere in the country, and even from other countries, without any problems. Most trains stop at this station, which is about 5 kilometres from the centre of Barcelona. Once you get here, you have many options for getting around. But if you want the most convenient, quickest and cheapest way, book your hire car at Sants Station and pick it up as soon as you get off the train.

By car:

For the more daring and road-loving, we recommend that if you find yourself in one of the following cities, book a hire car and follow these tips to enjoy the wonders of Barcelona.

Tour of the Barcelona coastline in a hire car

We take the car from one of our car hire offices in Barcelona with the intention of getting to know the region a little better. Our route will take us to some of the most charming places on the coast. So if you're ready, let's start our engines.

Vilanova i La Geltrú

We will start in the morning in Vilanova i La Geltrú. A stroll through this town on the coast of Barcelona should include a walk from the Plaça de la Vila to the castle of La Geltrú. The latter has been rebuilt on the base of the old medieval castle and is now the Regional Historical Archive. Before midday we leave Vilanova on the C-31 to the C-32 in the direction of Barcelona, a journey of approximately 50 kilometres by road. We will leave the airport on our right entering by the Avenida de Castelldefels in the direction of El Prat de Llobregat.

Barcelona

Our stop in Barcelona will be at La Boqueria Market, which we will reach by Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes until the intersection with Carrer de Balmes and straight on to Les Rambles. This market is considered one of the best in the world and is a great place to stop and get to know the magnificent products of the region and, above all, to stop for lunch at one of the stalls or in one of the bars you'll find. After lunch we will continue our route by car along the coast of Barcelona until we reach the beginning of the Costa Brava, in Blanes. We will stop at the Serralada Litoral Park.

Maresme and Vallés Oriental

Leave Barcelona in the direction of Santa Coloma de Gramenet along the Ronda Literal and take the C-33 for approximately 20 kilometres until you reach the BP-5002 road to the Vilanova del Vallès Montornès del Vallès/El Masnou junction. It is considered one of the best natural areas on the coast. Its poplar and alder forests intermingle with the lower areas of the streams full of Mediterranean vegetation. We also have the option, depending on the time of year, of visiting the nearby town councils, which organise activities to promote knowledge of the environment and the natural products that can be obtained. So it will be a good time to shop for spectacular products.

Mataró

From the C-60 you can reach the centre of Mataró in just 30 minutes. The most modernist city is represented by the buildings of Josep Puig i Cadafalch. Places that you will find strolling through the centre are the Town Hall, the municipal market of El Rengle or the Coll i Regàs house. Book your car hire in Barcelona now with Pepecar. With us you can always choose the cheapest price to book your car. Our car hire comparator offers you the best deals. Visit the best places in Barcelona and its surroundings with the hire car service.

Around Barcelona by hire car

Book your car hire in Barcelona now with Pepecar. With us you can always choose the cheapest price to book your car. Our car hire comparator offers you the best deals on the market. Visit the best places in Barcelona and its surroundings with the rent a car option. We know there are many more places, but Tossa de Mar, Blanes and Aran Valley are waiting for you.

TOSSA DE MAR

Tossa de Mar is situated on the impressive Costa Brava, one of the most beautiful tourist paradises in Spain. Undoubtedly, its climate, its people, its beaches and its gastronomy make it one of the best places in the whole country. One of the reasons why Tossa de Mar is famous is because it has appeared in some Spanish films, above all, for its great beauty and its breathtaking views. Considered as the "Blue Paradise", you can visit wonderful places such as the fantastic Tossa de Mar Castle, the Playa Grande beach, the Tossa Lighthouse Museum, or the Torre des Moros.

To get there you need a vehicle with which you can move around at your own time, like the one we offer you in the Pepecar search engine. Take the AP-7 road towards the northeast and you will arrive in less than 1 hour and 20 minutes. You will have to drive 105 kilometres to get there.

BLANES

It is the first town belonging to the Costa Brava and it is known as the Gateway to the Costa Brava (or the Gateway). It is located in the province of Girona and is, without a doubt, one of the best places to have the family or friends holiday of your life.

Blanes is an ideal destination for its wide range of daytime and night-time tourism, its festivals, restaurants, monuments and beaches. Moreover, this is the place where the biggest fireworks competition in Europe takes place. But that's not the only thing, Blanes is famous for its Marimurtra Botanical Garden, considered the Mediterranean botanical garden par excellence and with amazing views, for Sa Palomera, which is a small islet in the middle of the beach, and, above all, the Castle of San Juan, from where the most typical postcard pictures of the town are taken.

To access the castle and garden you will need a rental car, as the access is on top of a mountain. So, to get there from Barcelona, book your car in the city and take the C-32 road in a north-easterly direction. The journey will take you approximately 1 hour and 5 minutes, as it is about 70 kilometres away. Don't miss out on this great opportunity.

VALLE DE ARÁN

If you like the mountains, skiing and enjoying breathtaking views, the region of the Aran Valley is the perfect place for you. It is located in the central area of the Pyrenees and is in the province of Lérida.

It is known for its proximity to France and, of course, for being one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain. In the Val d'Aran you will find world-famous places of impressive quality, such as the ski resort of Baqueira and the village of Baqueira. But you can also visit the villages of Bagergue, Arties and Garós, whose views and activities are endless.

The gastronomy in this area is very good and the restaurants you'll find here will leave you with a great taste in your mouth. Not to mention that you can visit the Aigüestortes National Park and Lake Sant Maurici. To get there from Barcelona, we recommend that you book a hire car, because the 315 kilometres you have to cover cannot be done in any other way. Take the A-2 and N-230 roads, as this route will take you about 4 hours and 20 minutes.
