The point of entry to the Balearic Islands that receives the most air traffic is Palma de Majorca International Airport, also known as Son Sant Joan. It is located within the municipality and only 8 kilometres from the capital.
Before the construction of Son Sant Joan airport, Mallorca had the Sant Bonet airport, which only served commercial flights. Years later, they decided to build Palma de Majorca airport, which finally opened its commercial traffic in 1960.
Majorca airport has 4 modules (A, B, C and D) ready to handle more than 25 million passengers annually, making it the third most important airport in Spain in terms of passenger volume.
