Car hire at Tenerife North Airport

• Tenerife North Airport (or Los Rodeos)   
• Tenerife South Airport (also known as Aeroporto de Tenerife Sur Reina Sofia, after the former Queen of Spain).

Located in the municipality of San Cristóbal de la Laguna, a World Heritage Site, Los Rodeos International Airport is popularly known as Tenerife North Airport. 

Dedicated mainly to domestic and inter-island travel, it is about 10 kilometres from the island's capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, so hiring a car at Tenerife North Airport is a good idea to travel freely to different parts of the island. The history of this airport has several versions. Some say that it was a mistake, that it all started because Hitler asked Franco to build an airport for the transfer of his troops in Africa. A team of Germans studied the possible situation, but its construction was finally postponed. 

When they looked at the plans again, they found an X and assumed that was where it was to be built. And that is where it was built. It seems that the Los Rodeos airport at that point is where it was not supposed to be built. That would explain why the airport is situated in such a rocky and foggy area. 

However, the history of the airport dates back to 1929, when the Lufthansa company announced that it would be flying from Berlin to Tenerife. The council decided to build a provisional aerodrome for this flight. 

Later, in 1936, the council ordered the construction of the airport, but the Spanish Civil War was in the middle of it, and later the works continued. 

On 3rd May 1946, a ministerial order officially opened the airport to traffic, and a little later, a decree of 12th July officially opened it as a customs airport open to all types of national and international traffic.
