If you are travelling in summer, the Prosperina Reservoir is an obligatory stop to cool off. This reservoir of Roman origin is located just ten minutes and about 5 kilometres from Mérida. Apart from having a certain historical importance, as it was here that the battle for the reign of Isabella the Catholic as Queen of Castile took place, today it is one of the best freshwater beaches in the whole of Extremadura.

A visit to Zafra is also recommended. This municipality, an ancient Roman territory, is located some 62 kilometres from Merida and can be reached by motorway in three quarters of an hour in your hire car. A stroll along Calle Sevilla or a coffee in the Alcázar de los Duques de Feria, which has been converted into a Parador Nacional, are some of the things you should not miss on your visit. If you want to enjoy more of the natural surroundings, we recommend a walk towards the Sierra de El Castellar along the path known as colorao.

• Roman Baths of Alange: these thermal baths, located some 17 kilometres from Mérida and just over twenty minutes away, date from the Roman period of the Flavian dynasty. Nowadays they function as a spa and you can opt for traditional curative treatments. The main reason for its creation has undoubtedly been maintained over the years.
   
• Badajoz: if you decide to go to the city of Badajoz from Merida, you should know that the journey takes three quarters of an hour and is about 65 kilometres. Visit the Alcazaba fortress, the Palace of the Counts of Roca, the Plaza de San José, the Plaza Alta and the Plaza de la Soledad. You can also stroll around the historic quarter and enjoy the local gastronomy with some migas extremeñas (fried breadcrumbs) or a fresh gazpacho (cold soup).
   
• Cáceres: if you finally decide to head for the city of Cáceres from Mérida, the journey by car takes around 45 to 50 minutes and is about 65 kilometres along the A-66 motorway. Once there, be amazed by its impressive Monumental City, a World Heritage Site, where you can stroll through cobbled streets between palaces, churches and stately homes. Don't miss the Plaza Mayor, the Torre de Bujaco, the Arco de la Estrella and the Palacio de las Veletas.
